speaking of miniatures...

Yesterdays post on the World's Smallest Letter by Leafcutter Designs opened me up to see and remember some other great works in miniature. I'm in love with the concept of a world in miniature-its pure fantasy, magic and imagination, wonder and possibility...

And I remembered this exhibition at the Museum of Jurassic Technology, my favorite museum/ work of art, called The Eye of the Needle. The museum blurs the boundary between science and art, fact and fantasy. The artist, Hagop Sandaldjian, carves a single strand of hair in the eye of a needle! I couldn't make this up- click the links to read! The image above, called Wild Animals, from the exhibition shows twelve animals and a crowd of people carved from ONE SINGLE strand of hair! Maybe I'm a huge sucker and this is just a myth created by the brilliant David Wilson. For reals, the MJT is amazing and I'd blog it everyday just to share how much I love it.

Want to read more about David Wilson's MJT and curiosity cabinets, read this. It's great!

Embroidery on Heart Handmade...

Marichelle of Heart Handmade was nice enough to include me in her stitch picks today. Nice to be in this grouping. I recently found donkeypony and loved her little animals and enhabiten is one of my favorite etsy shops. and check out the interview just below it with forestbound also on Heart Handmade. i'm feeling her work and will have one of those backpacks one day!

twerking it...

today and last night i've done one thing, work on my pieces for Gallery Hanahou's embroidery show, Forget Me Not. The show is an appropriately timed nod to Valentine's Day. I've got three pieces to finish and very little time. so all day i've been stitching up hearts and bees and wreaths of green...

work in progress... , originally uploaded by miniature.rhino.

...i'm so behind on my own work because i've been making these Custom Heart Samplers. This is my first batch and as soon as I finish the pieces for the show I'll work on the second batch. it's been great talking to people for these orders and putting an even more personal touch into my interactions with people on etsy. thats what its all about to me right- i'm just this girl in my bedroom in brooklyn making things that i love and wanting to share that with others. i totally forgot to take a picture of them all done-errr! but i loved seeing all the packages stacked and ready for shipping. what a great feeling...

I've decided to keep this listing up in my shop as a regular item, but at the moment I can't take any more custom orders. damn you day job!

newnew team meeting with etsy!...

....was really interesting. I went to my first meeting with the new new etsy team- lots of people and lots of worth while information was shared. We were luck enough to have Maria Thomas, etsy's Chief Operating Officer and Sarah Hicks, Vice President, Product Management at etsy and Matt from the Community & Labs there as well.

It was great to hear them talk about their work with etsy and they took time to answer questions and asked alot themselves. They all seemed so dedicated and passionate about their work and truly inspired by the work their doing.
I was impressed by their dedication- they are visiting team meetings up and down the east coast to talk with sellers, ask them questions, hear their concerns and address them. So glad I was there to hear it.

I thought this might be of interest to others...They are working to improve many things on a list that Maria joked was always "119" items long. Mainly the top priorities are registration, search and checkout. Creating an easier registration process, would ultimately bring more people to etsy. Search is a real issue with etsy for me. It is often irrelevant. Items that are inappropriately tagged, or items that come up on the top of searches because they are recently listed are for the most part not what interest me as a buyer, so I'll spend so much time sifting through useless listings.

There were many things discussed as possibilities for the future, there were just so many things they'd like to improve upon. A few mentioned were:

-changing the initial search tool on the front page, from the drop down menu to something more intuitive. For example, when I first made a shop and wanted to show my mother, she could not figure out the drop down menu. From what I heard at the meeting is a real concern.
-creating a different type of Favorites system. Makiing sub categories, like wish lists, and even registries. I'd love this!!!
-incentives for adding favorities/hearting, like a recently hearted page akin to the just sold pages
-in house statistics were mentioned
-in house check out system was mentioned. Right now buyers are turned over at checkout to Paypal, which complicates both the checkout process and ability to offer discounts, coupons and gift certificates. Easing this process would make it easier for the buyer to make a purchase and for sellers to offer rewards to customers.

This was just some of the things discussed. I just felt really empowered by the meeting their goals were clear- to grow etsy and to grow all our businesses. They believed in etsy and it made me happy to hear. I work so hard on my shop and it felt really good to see the CEO and VP working just as hard.

Urban Taxidermist

Meet Ms. Melissa Dixson, a taxidermist living in Williamsburg. I saw this feature of her on The New York Times today in their ongoing series One in 8 Million, about all the unique individuals living in NY. The series features a slide show of images narrated by the individual. I really enjoy hearing the person's own voice and seeing into their lives. Really interesting and the photographs by Todd Heisler are beautiful. Taxidermy! Sound & Images! Check it out here...

dreaming of be organized

a certain kind of organized though, a little chaos, a little clutter, and all in little boxes, bottles and drawers. I have almost zero work space (new york i love you, but you're bringing me down.) maybe organized is the wrong word. I need more space to work, to see the things that inspire me and to be able to access my tools... so for now i can collect images and ideas...

Trading Curiosities

BrooklynRehab makes this wonderful NY Souvenir. Its a pigeon feather in a large corked vial with a tag that tells you exactly where it was found. The tag makes it a specimen of study, the numbering and location details, and I love the idea of being a naturalist in the big city- is that even possible? This reminded me of one of my favorite possessions, an old bird watcher's field guide. It's kind of a fill in the blank type of book. The woman wrote long hand in beautiful script where she found all kinds of birds, what they ate, how many she saw and even drew colorful pictures. Its amazing!

I also got a Charmed custom initial pin with an "M" I put it on right away and love it. I'm so excited about my little treasures. She has lots of other great vintage finds and the images are beautiful, so check out her shop.
I traded A Miniature Cabinet of Curiosities #10, which had lots of little natural wonderous objects in it and it came wrapped up with a vintage key...

CNN!

I'm honored and so excited to be featured in a CNN article, by Jen Haley, called Turn Your Skills or Your Stuff Into Extra Cash. Etsy and I are all over it and I'm so glad to share my love for etsy with the world. Many thanks to Jen for the feature! Please check it out!

50th sale...

Thanks bricks! It was the 13th Book and Letter Hybrid on the 13th of January and the buyer thought that it would bring her luck. I hope she like the little something I added....

updates...

...finally! to my etsy shop. i've listed a new batch of books for mailing with some Valentiney imagery and some new Samplers.
its so hard for me to keep up with my shop. working full time and making on my off time leaves little time for eating and sleeping. i recently "met" Amy of the etsy shop ameliamae, and she described it as needing to find a balance between work and etsy. i'm not there yet. slowly, slowly but for now a little update to the shop... and a thanks to Amy! here's one of her lovely pieces...

a few of my favorites...

...from the Postcards From the Edge show a benefit for Visual Aids...there were so so many postcards and even more people at the preview party. it was so hard to take pictures or there would be more here to share... there were quite a few kitties...

The list is intense and includes some of my art boyfriends and girlfriends...Cindy Sherman, Kara Walker, Jeff Koons, Catherine Opie, Ann Hamilton, Kiki Smith, Carrie Mae Weems, Adam Fuss, Vito Acconci, John Baldessari, Louise Lawler, Marcel Dzama, Barry McGee, and more. I have big crushes on them! so it will be nice to see all the works tonight. I like how they set up the show though. You are not informed who made which pieces and all postcards are $75. My entry looks like this.
