..cinnamon tea. in india i drank cinnamon tea for the first time and my mind was blown, so for v-day my boo got me some and i'm drinking it as i write this. it said to me, "i'm so good. go write a blog post about it." and here i am....
it was interesting to learn in my internetting that cinnamon in sanskrit means "skin" as in the skin of the tree it is peeled from. (it was also referenced as an "edible wood". is that funny to anyone else but my inner 14 year old self?) it has all kinds of reported medicinal uses, from soothing toothaches to aphrodisiac, but all i know is that it makes the best tea...

u. g. l. y...

while drinking my late morning tea and flipping through some of my old books I found this back page of a school music book. it made me laugh and smile, even though its kinda mean, finding interesting text in books, like margin notes, signatures with dates, dedications and underlining are some of my favorite things in old and secondhand books. so this - colors, text, and fake keyboard- made my day...
my 5 year diary...
...finally after a year of watching my boyfriend write in his 5 year diary every night i've gotten my own. (i got it at cog&pearl, my favorite shop in park slope) sometimes he'll read to me what happened on this day exactly a year ago and it always is so crazy to me how skewed my sense of time is and how horrible my memory is. i'll think, "that was a year ago?!" or i may not even remember something at all. so i've wanted to start my own for awhile now.
the design, by Tamara Shopsin, is great- simple and clean. i love the significance of the tree slice on the front of the book. there's also a space to log your travel and the books you've read...

Tamara also makes these pins.... ! it's a "real lincoln quote, forged handwriting"

your old room...

"Lately, I’ve been making quiet still-lifes in the houses and spaces where I grew up. Globe is one of these images. The globe was an item I begged for as a child. I often had whimsical notions of items I'd like to own—one year I was absolutely nuts for an electric toothbrush. The globe is extra special because it's also a lamp. Now it sits in the room I stay in when I visit my parents' house and is always plugged in and glowing when I arrive, right next to my field hockey trophy from high school. I've been thinking about making this image for years and I'm pleased to have it now." - Rachel Hulin
I can relate to this, to the comfort of things and small actions of kindness. i have a whole room of things back in my old room CA, not to mention how good coming home feels. You can buy this beautiful image here at 20x20, which has some very reasonable prices for limited edition art, and visit rachel's website here.

bright new things...
my friend Lynelle has a nice new etsy shop called Bright New Things. we went to school together way back for photography. we basically lived in the darkrooms printing the old school way, black and white and color, no computers. her shop has lots of her beautiful imagery....

oh yeah and i should mention that lynelle is a kung fu master (what!) and has awesome sphinx cats (hairless cats!) that i've been wanting to steal from her forever!

and lots of good vintage finds, like these rubber stamps i'm loving...

say hi to her!
wax seal rings!
i came across these seal rings from Blind Spot Jewellery (etsy) on their flickr. i am duly impressed. i love creating beautiful mail and often use sealing wax on special packages and letters, so i'd love one of these rings. but which!? they are lovely rings in themselves, but with the utilitarian aspect and old timey charm they are just so crazy good!

and check out their how to on using sealing wax with these rings here

to be made of glass...
i live with two hardcore music lovers, who introduce me to new sounds. last night my roommate was humming this song Glass, by Bat For Lashes. its hauntingly pretty, with big drums and lacey vocals. i've got it on repeat. when i looked her up i saw all these comparisons to My Brightest Diamond and the Kate Bush, so it make sense that I'd like this too.

photo: Jennifer Tzar
i liked these images of her alot- a little witchy, kinda magical, and you gotta love a bat tattoo!

listen to Glass.....
feelin it...
...i learned about the work of Steve Seeley through Punch Gallery's show Grätüitöüs Umläüt. the religious iconography and animals got me right away. i especially like the irregular paper shapes and the use of old book paper and book covers. see for yourself here....

i like seeing the grid of colors used on the left.
(pushing up my metaphorical glasses) like painting "metadata".

making music...kinda
at this very moment, right now, i am typing on a keyboard in a gallery on 21st St. my typing, and all typing by gallery staff, is being translated into music via a player piano as part of the current exhibition for Céleste Boursier-Mougenot at Paula Cooper Gallery. i work here as an archivist and this project is especially interesting to me- because i'm in a way making music.
This is from the press release:
"This work hinges on a computer program designed by the artist that translates fragments of language typed on the gallery’s office computers into a musical score played in real-time by an acoustic piano placed in the gallery. The program isolates a set of notes, dynamics and other musical terms from the language typed on the gallery’s computers to build its ongoing score. Acting as conductor, composer, and instrumentalist all at once, the piece renders an in situ musical phenomenon that registers the labor of the gallery and plays it in song."
Céleste's work often involves music, or making music/ sound, in unique ways. In one piece, From Here to Ear, he placed electric guitars horizontally in a gallery space with little birds free to fly about. When they'd land on the guitars it would create sound.
so if your in NY you should come see the show and maybe if you ask nicely they'll let you type and make the piano go blink, pling, plonk... it acutally sounds quite nice....
