when i was asked to participate in the fiber arts show Lost At Sea (curated by kristen rask of schmancy) i was so excited by the theme. lost at sea evokes images of treasure hunting, pirates and ships, sailors and their mythology and tattoos, and creatures from the deep. but i thought of the heavens, how stars were guides for navigating the seas and made two pieces.... due north (polaris)
polaris is a star in the little dipper or Ursa Minor. it's almost exactly at the north pole, so it was used for navigation- it's always due north....
how many nights?
an interactive embroidery piece. the stars spin like the rotation of a real night sky. you can find gemini, orion, draco, usra minor & major, cancer, leo, and sirius. you can watch this video to see how it works.
Lost at Sea,
May 6 - June 11
Opening May 6th from 7-9.

this past weekend i got to debut my little letter writing service stand at the spring handmade cavalcade and homemade: brooklyn. it was a non-stop weekend, but so much fun! thanks to everyone who came out and made some mail with me or just stopped by to say hi!
the shc was a full MR crafty affair, but at homemade: brooklyn, from the pic above, was all about interacting with the peoples, typing and making little letters. we got a shout out in Daily Candy too!
this mess, will soon be something i want to brag about. a friends dad built me something and now i'm sanding and staining the wood. as soon as it's finished i can't wait to share the end result, but for now marvel at my mess making skills, if you will....
+ too busy crafting for two events back to back next weekend. mark your calendars!!!
saturday, april 24 the {New New} Spring Handmade Cavalcade at Berry Park, 10 - 5 pm
a craft fair featuring 25 new york crafty ladies and gents. berry park is a nice, kick back bar. i'm on the roof and it's going to be a beautiful day. imagine it: you, some friends, a beer in the sun on the roof. come out and play and do say hello....
and sunday april 25 Homemade: Brooklyn, 522 metropolitan, 12- 8pm
homemade: brooklyn is a pop-up shop organized by the shiny squirrel with lots of designers, artists, and events. i'll have a really fun, interactive, tiny mail making stand. it will be super cute and typewriters are involved! come by and make mail with me!!!
i wish i could have taken part in trade school - a barter for education project that took place for about a month in nyc. people taught some really interesting diverse classes like; composting, business, performance, bookmaking, and "baudrillard camp" in exchange for say, "music recommendations", food, "bounty paper towels", a "basic photography lesson" or "indigo fabric".
i like the idea of sharing, not only your interest and passion, but your skills in a community setting.
i found this project via kickstarter (which is another great idea in itself) where you can donate to the cause and help them find another location to continue the project.
see their past classes here. do it! it's really fun to click through the classes and see what the instructors requested in exchange for the class.
humm. what class would you take? what would you have traded? or even, taught!?
outside l in opens tonight, 4- 7 pm in easton, pa. the show explores the artificial dichotomy between nature and the man-made interior, between “outside” and “inside” spaces, and the human desire to connect with, be inspired by, and bring “inside” elements of nature.
unfortunately i can't make it, which makes me really sad. but if you are in the area, please check it out! i'd love to see images of the show. the work looks amazing...

weekend.... i know it's sunny out but all i can think of are starry skies, tiny burst of light, and velvety blacks. this is the soundtrack to the post. listen. then scroll....
thought of this song and had to hear it. then watching the video broke my heart, like five times. boy loves cat (sphynx cat!), boy dresses cat in sweater, boy loses cat, then finds cat. i don't care what you say about sphynx cats. they're cute, feel incredible and i want one of my own to love!
since my roommate moved out we've wanted to adopt bug, our cat, a brother friend, a little dog or cat buddy. it breaks my heart how many dogs and cats need homes. it's staggering and heartbreaking, even cried reading the statistic on euthanasia from the american humane site. they estimate that 3.7 MILLION animals were euthanized in 2008.
this is my bob barker moment- spay and neuter your pets people! and ADOPT if you can!! no breeders, no pet stores, no way dude. (as an aside, i fully see the irony with the inclusion of sphynx cats here. they are a pure breed or breeder cat, but seriously there is a rescue for every breed!)
have you ever adopted a pet?? i rescued bugs. he was a sad, hungry little cat straight from the streets of brooklyn, hence the attitude. now he's my son.
+ i learned that walt whitman once worked as a librarian at the brooklyn museum's library. it made me feel a little more in love with brooklyn.
+ harry houdini would have had his 136th birthday in march. such an interesting iconic figure and i guess a romantic too. he asked to be buried with a pillow of letters his mother had written under his head.
bug + cat nip toys. walks. sun. brooklyn alleys. cherry blossoms. the most surreal moment of the day was pushing my granny cart through the brooklyn museum. so, so nice to take our first spring walk in the evening.
i always remember this day, because it's my grandparents wedding anniversary. kinda a strange day to get hitched. it's also a beautiful, sunny day here in brooklyn. i thought i'd kick off spring with a giveaway for TWO! new items in my shop, my Matchbook Stationery and my DIY Message In a Bottle Kit. So there will be two winners.
one winner gets a set of two Matchbook Letters. these are bits and pieces of my favorite papers sewn to flat olive and kraft flats. they come with a matching envelope. remember i shared i was working on something new?
second winner gets a DIY Message In a Bottle Kit, which is a vial with a charm of your choosing, two sheets of nice creme paper and a little cotton bag to gift your letter.
did a great big spring update in the shop listing new items, like vintage stamps, and lots of old favorites, like stars!
just leave a comment to enter. tell me what your most excited about for spring.... i love exploring brooklyn on long bike rides! can't wait for some adventures.
if you don't have a blogger profile please leave me your email, so i can get in touch with you if you are a winnah.
