Happy Friday peoples!!

i loves me some halloween...

... it's the perfect season for baking and watching horrible horror movies whilst you frost disfigured pumpkin, bat, cat and owl cookies.  The cookie cutters are from a vintage set we were given and I have been waiting so long to use them.  No a three year old didn't make these, me and my boyfriend did, and were damn proud. It was delicious and we had so much fun! Bug agrees, nom...

what are you guys doing to get into the alls hallow eve spirit?

impossible gloves and embroidery....

Gloves, 2009
Gloves, 2009
Subcutaneous, 2009
Doillies, Influenza, 2004

The work of Laura Splan seems impossible, lovely and grotesque. The gloves and embroidery in the hoop above are made from cosmetic facial peel. How she can hand embroider on such a delicate, disposable material is beyond me. In the last image, a machine embroidered lace doily, she visualizes the influenza virus. The others, like HIV and Herpes, are equally mesmerizing. So tactile- I want to touch the them! Science with art is my favorite!

thank you to everyone for the birthday wishes! i had nice simple day. it's not glamorous or anything, but i did exactly what i wanted, have a nice slow day.  I worked on a project I've not had time to previously, read and drank tea by window light.  J took me to the Rubin museum, so we could relive our Nepal trip. The show, Embodying the Holy, was great - eastern and western icons side by side. i would love to have a russian icon painting!! then dinner at a fancy vegan restaurant, Blossom.  lavender creme brulee for dessert- everyday please! and it was a double dessert day cause then we went to Coco V for fancy chocolates and chai tea... a good day, no?
ps i was just asked what book i was reading in the first photograph. it's dave egger's What is the What and i'm truly wrapped up in it. it's about the Lost Boys of Sudan. the story is brutal and making appreciate all i have.

the shady dell

Welcome to the Shady Dell! it's a little trailer park motel in Bisbee, AZ, an old miner town. There are a bunch of 1950's airstreams and even a boat and old school bus that you can stay in. It was one of my favorite hotel experiences. Our trailer even came with a little sweet cat....

each trailer has  the original interior, is decorated in the 1950's period, and full of fun details to explore within the cabinets and drawer, which are full of games, movies and magazines.

check out this wedding at the Shady Dell that ended with some matching tattoos!

collecting the sun

missing the warmth and adventure of Arizona.  Here are some images of the highlights of my recent trip there.  it's a beautiful and strange landscape. Even though I'm from CA it's so foreign to see cactus everywhere and they have such anthropomorphic shapes. all i see are bubble figures freeze dancing in the desert with stretchy faces.

i've never seen an owl close up before.  was like a 5yr old at the desert museum, which was more like a zoo. check out the triangle pattern on the feathers!

this squirrel wanted to attack me. i thought at first how cute, but seriously it got scary with him throwing himself against the glass. driving in the desert is amazing. windows down, desert sounds....

look out tomorrow for a post about the shady dell, a trailer park hotel!!
