last night we started reading Beowulf, a scandinavian epic poem. jeremy read to me and at first i had a hard time getting into it. it's just so out of our everyday speech. then the pictures started to become clearer for me as the words became puzzles and visual vignettes. here are some of my favorites...
treasure seat
swan road
night-sea
sea-brutes
fate goes ever as fate must*
banquet at the bottom of the sea
night shapes came stealing forth under the cloud-murk
*fate in old english "wyrd". how nice is that?

I think Beowulf is quite unpopular, but one of my favourite memories of my medieval studies degree was reading it in Old English!
ReplyDeletethanks all! i was afraid i'd sound pretentious, but j is danish and uses Scandinavian mythology as an inspiration to his work. we also saw (don't laugh) 13th warrior the other night and that made us pick up Beowulf... anabela- i can't believe you can read in old english! amazing...
ReplyDeleteWTF ?! J is Danish ?
ReplyDeleteAlso, I always wanted to see that film !!! I thought the plot was pretty perfect but wasn't so sure about the actors so I never watched it in the end ... How did you like it ?
I'm such a sucker for Northern Myths ... My bro and I watched "Valhalla Rising" the other day ... OH MY GOD. Watch it if you haven't yet.
And listen some Wagner while reading "Beowulf" !

well, he's of Danish decent, hence the big red beard. he's not a national or anything, but yes he is and very proud of his ancestry...
ReplyDeleteoh, and it's a good movie. kinda cheesy sometimes, but what hollywood movie isn't. lots of similarities to beowulf though.
ReplyDeleteWow. These are beautiful! How are you handling the language in it or has it been revised?
ReplyDeleteLove the photos~
