i'll be at booth 102 right off bayard st. with my friends of A One Time Thing (who make music!).
there are so many good makers here- i think it's over 300! lots to see, so if you would like to stop by and say hi here's a little map....
find me! come say hello!

protection
what strange beauty in these portraits of young danish woman in traditional costume. the headdress, called a strude, is also the title of this series of photographs by Trine Søndergaard. the strude protects the face from the elements, but out of context is an other worldly mask. the textiles, light, and aura are so interesting to me, so i can't wait to see this show in person at bruce silverstein gallery. it's up until june 26th in nyc.
sunday summary

+ working non stop preparing for renegade (brooklyn & la) and working on my regular orders. MR has been doing good this month! a big thanks to everyone for their support!!
+ received a gift awhile back of a giant collection of embroidery thread. squealed with delight opening it. here it is on my work desk.
+ reorganized my workplace after jane shared her's here. i made her a custom heart and little alphabet. love all her little things, the typewriter, and the room color....
+ oh, did i mention that recently we took in a street cat that was in our neighborhood since i moved in two years ago. he had a horribly swollen paw. it was so bad it looked bent and broken. it's now all healed up and he and bug have met, but are not quite sure of each other just yet.....
may luk ceramics

by me!
here are some of my favorite photographs i took of may luk's new work. i love working with may. not only is she a dedicated hard worker, and super talented lady she's also hilarious.
check out her out website and etsy shop!
ebay is evil...
it ebay makes me want so much i don't need. still though, it's super fun (or a total time suck) to browse. love the old school design and photograph in this vintage luggage label...
foxfire
images via absolute sellout
i was asked what the foxfire books are from this post where they are imaged in an ideal bookcase. these books have an amazing story, so i thought i'd share them. the books originally were magazines written, researched, and published by high school students in the Appalachia mountains beginning in the 60's . they interviewed the elder folk of the mountains to collect their stories, traditional crafts, recipes, myths and accounts of daily life. they are lessons in simplicity, rural life, and self sufficiency. sometimes it's just the story of someone's life and their day and it's so interesting- the way they talk, the chores done (like spooning out eye balls in a cow's head to make stew) and the 60's photographs and titles are really interesting too.
you can learn about the history of quilting bees, how to build your own cabin, snake mythology and that's just the first book.
they still publish the magazine and even have made a museum. find foxfire here.

it pleases me so...
look what i received in the mail today, a handmade pillow with a crocheted butterfly all made by my grandmother. opening the package i felt overwhelmed by how special this object is. there was also another butter-creme doily. love.
i grew up surrounded by women makers. my grandmother and my aunts all craft. they dressed me in knit sweaters, puffy painted t-shirts, homemade clothes & halloween costumes, and jean jackets straight outta the 80s. when we got together we'd make things, sit together and talk. i appreciate this so much now that i'm older and have moved away from home. i feel so luck to have had that kind of education.
craft to me sharing history, passing on ideas and techniques, and creating community....
miss my family and making together....
cat anniversary...
it's been 2 years and i haven't kicked you to the curb yet, bug. stay cute little cat, because when you bite my ankles and poop on the floor, it's that mug of yours that saves you every time....more boys + cats thanks to mathyld for sharing that site....
support your local stitchers...
don't forget to visit gallery hanahou tomorrow night for the opening of Lost At Sea at Gallery Hanahou....

+ holy wow, these embroidered portraits by daniel kornrumpf are stunning and unimaginable to accomplish. it's like a mini chuck close.
+ i want you square.
+ crazy great weather here in nyc. bike rides, parks, raining leaves. the people sunbathing in the park. there's nothing like this in ca. i'm still a tourist in my own city. i'm not sure if it'll ever stop.
+ reading proust was a neuroscientist by jonah lehrer and thoroughly enjoying it. it's not fair that one man be so handsome, smart, interesting, young and accomplished. he is also an editor for seed magazine- i like.
