best thing today....

was seeing this work via ffffound, which can i say is the devil, much like the flickr. i just get lost happily clicking away good work time. but anything with winners ribbons and the line, "cool and smooth moves" wins me over! it looks like it's on a book cover, which i like very much.

this past week was crazy! i'm so thankful that the shop opening was well received, as was Marichelle's (from Heart Handmade) Shop Live event. Many, many  thanks to her for organizing it and inviting me to participate!! Thank you Marichelle for supporting so many shops and handmade!  it made for a great opening week. 
but along with that came a kitchen accident- it's not me though! my boyfriend cut the tip of his finger off-ahhh!  and now i must button up his shirts and put on his watch. he now has a frankenstein thumb that will forever be slanty. i was trying to think up good stories he can tell when he's asked how it happened- hummm...what do you think?

from the flickr group, Curiosity Cabinet- Handmade Specimens. i'm always watching out for their picks and these collage works by Alexis Anne Mackenzie are just the kind of thing i like. nature imagery, vintage papers, scientific study and time consuming obsessive detail work. i'm especially interested in the bizarre twists and turns the images make, between iconic image a strange narrative. find lots more of alexis's work here on her flickr and blog....

for love of daguerreotypes...

i first came to art making through photography. its a great source of inspiration for me. i found these images on flickr, which has is an endless collection of amazing images. daguerreotype images are is so compelling to me because of their age, formality and because they are objects meant to be held. most came in leather cases with velvet lining, so you'd open this object and see an image of a loved one. sometimes there was text or hair included too, so there was this full sensory experience beyond just looking. it was about remembrance and longing.

I like the details in these images in the props, clothing, hair styles and gesture.

this little girl is so amazing. look at her gloves and the way she stares back at you.

who posted it on flickr. it's the part of the hair that lets you know its a boy.

if you've ever seen daguerreotypes lit well they almost appear three dimensional and ghostly. i saw an exhibition at the george eastman house called, Young America, which was beautifully lit.

dreaming of be organized

a certain kind of organized though, a little chaos, a little clutter, and all in little boxes, bottles and drawers. I have almost zero work space (new york i love you, but you're bringing me down.) maybe organized is the wrong word. I need more space to work, to see the things that inspire me and to be able to access my tools... so for now i can collect images and ideas...
