I never made pom-poms as a kid. Recently, though I got a bunch of my grandmother's notions and there were a set of mysterious circle thingys, which are actually pom-pom makers in various sizes. One afternoon I made a shit ton of pom-poms to make up for all the missing childhood poms that never were. I feel like I've missed out for too long on the crafty magic these puffy little balls of string can bring. For the love of all things pom Sarah Goldschadt & Lexi Walters Wright have a new book coming out real soon (Oct. 1 2013) all about 'em, Pom-Poms! 25 Awesomely Fluffly Projects. It's such a bright, fun collection of projects for your home, events, and to wear.
The ideas are clever. Things I wouldn't have thought about and fell in love with instantly like the pop-pom cowl above, tinsel poms, and pom-pom piƱata (below). I've now got more pressure building for that quilt I've been dying to make–there will be pom-poms!
Seriously love the "Wrapping Styles" section (above), which gives recipes for getting different effects like polka dots, speckles, and stripes. There are also instructions for how to make poms from cardboard, a fork, even your fingers, and other materials like tissue paper, t-shirts(!), felt, tulle, fabric, and even coffee filters are transformed into a dreamy, dramatic pom-pom.
Thanks to Quirk Books I have an advanced copy of Pom-Poms! to giveaway to one lovely reader (or handsome reader. Wait you can be lovely and handsome. Whatever. You, you.). Just leave a comment here &
I'll pick a random winner a week from today, next Thursday, Oct. 3. Comment ideas: creative descriptive words for pom-poms other than pom-pom (I don't think I've ever said pom-pom more than in this here post!), what you'd like to make, and/or your fave crafty story about pom-pom making...

ReplyDeletei never thought i would want to own a book about pom-poms...but now i can't imagine NOT owning this book! it looks seriously cute. i actually got an urge to make pom-poms last winter (to make a yule garland) and tried the cardboard and fork methods. couldn't get them to make good looking balls of fluff...so i went out and got some pom-pom makers from the crafty store and then proceeded to make about 100 pom-poms. and i just bought a couple of new size of makers, like a week ago. it is kismet. this book and i. :)
ReplyDeletehave you seen the pom-poms that with letters in them (http://blog.mrprintables.com/alphabet-pompoms-tutorial/)? or animals (http://blog.mrprintables.com/how-to-make-animal-pom-poms/)? it is truly an art.
This book looks amazing! I would love to go pom pom crazy if I had this book!

I can see my 9yo daughter becoming pom-pom obsessed one stormy day this autumn. she would likely create a forest of pom-pom creatures, as well as a wardrobe of pom-pom adorned clothing for her stuffed animals. this book will be a source of delight for her.
ReplyDeleteI can't think of a word to describe this, but pom-poms are making me think of fluffy sea urchins, if such a creature were possible.

Ok, so, I've just made one pom-pom in my life and I was maybe 3 years old. Now I'm 30 something: the right age to start making them again;)

ReplyDeleteI love pom-poms! We used to make them to tie to our shoes for cheerleading in elementary school. Go Bulldogs!
ReplyDeleteOoo round, colourful, furry balls of happiness. I wish I were a cat:)
ReplyDeleteNow that I have a kitten, I'm making pom poms on the regular. This book looks super cute and would be a nice addition to my collection! :)
ReplyDeleteLove the pom-pom flowers on the cover and the pom-pom sparklers, so cute. My dog used to eat the pom-poms off my winter hat so they must be tasty too.
ReplyDeleteI was part of a yarn bomb and I made pom poms to hang from window awnings from the yarn scraps left on the floor by the other yarn bombers- rainbow is my favorite color so it was a perfect way to make rainbow poms.
ReplyDeleteI would love to have little bouquets of pom poms all over the house -- they would make me smile! Thank you for your blog!
ReplyDeleteI am making Pom Pom Garland to hang in my shop, Stitch in DSM Iowa! So quirky and fun! Perfect for the holiday season!
ReplyDeleteYou know, in all the years I've been knitting and crocheting, I've never made a pom pom. I love how they look, though, and I really want to make some pom pom things for my daughters. I bet my toddler would LOVE to cover herself in pom poms. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid that after reading this post, I've developed a full-blown pom pom craving. I may have to look up some instructions and make a few...
Pom poms rock! I made pom pom ornaments last year and they were so much fun to make. However I am really liking the pom pom hedge hogs on the cover of the book, so cute! Are they paper weights? If not, they should be.
