A Month of Mail....

or a little personal challenge, to write a letter a day for the month of May...

a month of mail

a month of mail

I am well meaning, always the best of intentions. Every year I say that this will be the year I stay on top of my written correspondence. I'll send thank you notes for holiday gifts, remember to send birthday cards, and finally write back to my pen pals. Instead of feeling shitty about falling short again this year I decided to play catch up with a challenge to myself: a month of mail, everyday I'll write at least one letter, card or postcard. I'd love it if you joined me!

What I did is write a list of all the thank you's, hellos, upcoming birthdays, and notes I've been meaning to send. Then one by one, I'll tick off each letter daily. I don't have to mail one each day- just write it and enjoy making or choosing the stationary. Then at the end of the week I'll mail them all together. It's stressful to think of mailing one each day for me, as my post man never takes our outgoing mail and that means a walk to the post office each day.

I'd so love it if you wanted to join me! I'll be posting on flickr and twitter. We can use the hastag #monthofmail and your month doesn't have to start at the first of the month, just whenever you'd like. It can be a 30 day challenge to yourself...

Everyday I'll post my snail mail and some inspiring mail related links, how-to's, and I really want to make a Mother's Day card DIY project. I'm thinking a stitchy card!

Here's my first letter!...

  1. Love this idea! When I get behind in sending out letters & mail art swaps it's always the worst feeling. This May is not a good month for me to start this challenge for myself, but I do like the idea of being mindful and purposeful about correspondence. Looking forward to see what you create over the month!

    1. Thanks Anika! I hear you, it gets overwhelming when you feel behind, like I have too. I bet you make some pretty great mail. I've seen your sketchbooks and paintings...

    2. when i manage to get my act together, i do love to create little packages to send out, and I have a really good time coming up with ideas of fun things to include, or different ways to present stuff. Usually my recipients are happy. :D

  2. I'm forever feeling guilty about not sending out mail. I adore getting it... but I am a monster for not sending it out.

Maybe I'll try just one a week to start with. One a day is a bit daunting for me :)

    1. Maybe a month seems overwhelming... I think a week of mail would be a great personal challenge too. It's always so nice to get mail! I'm the same way- love getting, hardly send. (but not this month!)

  3. I absolutely love this idea! It would be a good excuse to get some glassine envelopes and such. (I saw yours in the picture and I LOVE it!)

If I do decide to start this challenge this month, I'll have to wait until after finals. I'll be looking forward to see more of your posts about this.

    xoxo,
    E

    1. Thanks so much Erica! Yeah, I like the peek of the contents that a glassine or vellum (that's what I used) envelop shows. Good luck on your finals!! Definitely let me know if you start your own challenge!

  5. What a great idea....your mail is beautiful, and even though it's an overwhelming month, I'm going to try to join you.

  6. This is such a wonderful idea! I love postal parcels and pretty letters myself. Certain things make me feel so 'grown up', I think because I played them for pretend so often as a child. Getting letters from far away is one, when I was a child my Mom let me play with old stationary and stamps and I would write imaginary letters from all sorts of pretend folks and slip them into a kleenex box :)
