A Month of Mail: day 31, the finish line!

day 31

day 31

Today's postcard, a Yoshitomo Nara painting, marks the last day of my month long daily mail challenge. I'm so proud that I followed through with this project and wrote a piece of mail everyday.

If you wanted to start your own daily mail project I have to tell you how rewarding it is to receive mail back. I've received a few letters already and am looking forward to more regular written correspondence. I know how good it feels to get good mail & I like being on both ends of that.

I think this challenge has helped me create a habit of writing more. I struggled much less with what to say, who to write to, and just simply putting pen to paper by the end of the month. Sometimes I'd sit there with a blank piece of paper in front of me and think, "What the hell am I going to fill up this paper with? Don't you dare talk about the weather." But really who cares, it's just nice to take the time and say hello. I know I appreciate it, and so will the recipient. I started by asking questions, answering those questions myself, saying how damn hot it got and what it felt like, sounded like, what I was up to and that paper got all filled up with my scratchy handwriting.

A lot of my paper stashed got used in the process and I treated myself by buying a few cards too. It's nice to reward yourself when you're doing something like this. It's motivating and helped me enjoy the process more when I had made or purchased nice stationery.

You should try your own mail challenge! Maybe a month, maybe just a week. It's just something nice to do for you & your friends. Let me know if you give this a try!!

I love seeing all the letters together! You can see the whole month of mail images here.

p.s one of my favorite parts of a letter is the salutation, like "With many well wishes" or "tatter tots and ketchup", "frogs in pajamas"....

A Month of Mail: day 24

day 24 of A Month of Mail

Today's mail is for my young cousin Laura who knits, crochets and spends her kid allowance on craft books. So when I got this book and polymer clay from attending the Etsy Martha Stewart show I knew I wanted to give it to her.

The blue heart stickers were made from painters tape. It' kinda like washi tape, but thicker and with texture. It's one of those super useful, unlikely craft tools I use all the time.

Also, cat photo bomb!

day 23

I used to live next to a woman that bought and sold greeting cards. She once had a garage sale with boxes and boxes full of cards and postcards. That must have been over ten years ago, so I've been lugging a set of these cat postcards since then. I guess I thought they were to cute to part with, but living in a dark drawer is no good either. Happy to share it finally.

The little cat in the red jumpsuit reminds me of Bug, now to find him a lil' red outfit!!

a stupid cute sock monkey card....
Day 22

Day 22

My grandmother would make sock monkeys and had an affinity for them. Now, when I see them I think of her and how crafty she was. Lately, I think of her all the time and these cards are a sweet reminder of her and just so stupid cute. Love them! There are a few different, equally goofy pictures. I hope the recipient shares in my love of the ridiculously cute!

Also, I just mailed a bunch of letters. So excited to receive some mail back! Here was my first batch...

day 16

Exhibit A of my paper hoarding. I picked up a few of these postcards back in 2006. I just really loved the image, "l.a. fingers" by Estevan Oriol. Reminds me of the movie Mi Vida Loca, which i love. Sad girl is pretty much my alter ego.

Since this was a promotional postcard for a show called LA Women it had lots of text on the back, so I covered it with a glue stick and some blank scrap paper. Like a new postcard 6 years later!

Worth Hoarding: Stationery faves

Doing this month of mail project has finally got me using lots of the stationery I've been hoarding. There was a postcard set I'd bought about ten years ago that I finally opened. I'd love to replenish my stash with these cards, a collection of some of my favorite stationery. There's so much great stationery out there to hoard! I'll have to do another installment of faves...

Couldn't choose just one of Furze Chan's cards

practically everything by Rifle Paper Co.

Present & Correct is a great place to start for all things stationery. I love just browsing their site....

What are some of your favorites?

A Month of Mail: day 14 & 15

These last two day's letters have been late night endeavors. I find that I like to end my days doing something for me, like playing  with water colors and writing a little letter. It's not the best time to photograph though, so thankfully my trusty iphone & instagram saves the day.

Are you writing any letters lately?

You can see all the letters here & learn more about my a month of mail project here

day 13

Day 13, & it's Mother's Day! I already sent my mom a package, so I wrote to one of my aunts to wish her a great day. I hardly see her, so it's nice to be able to stay in touch in a new way, written correspondence.

I used a Tracing Wheel and stamp pad to make some simple handmade stationery. Makes a plain white paper a lot more interesting and fun to make & receive....

a Mother's Day package...

day 9

Packaging up this Mother's Day gift made me miss home so much. I miss California, the lemon tree in our backyard, sweet oranges from my grandparents house in Santa Monica, cuddling with all our fuzzy ones there and more than anything else I miss my family. How nice it would be to bring my mom these gifts in person...

Since my mom loves to garden I got her a collection of garden themed gifties. My favorite was a bunch of beautifully designed seed packs from the Hudson Valley Seed Library....

A Month of Mail: day 8

good bye Maurice...
day 8
day 8So sad to hear this morning that Maurice Sendak had past away. I remember my parents taking me to see an operatic stage rendition of Where the Wild Things Are at the LA Music Center. It's a really fuzzy, early memory for me. I was 7 or 8 and it was the first stage play I'd ever seen. What stayed with me was the image of these giant monsters swinging from big, leafy trees.

Talking to my dad today about it was nice- he had vivid memories of our first trip as a family to an opera. He talked about how fantastical the staging was, that the monsters looked to be about 12 feet tall, how amazing the boat scene was. It's a great memory to share with my dad...

In keeping with my month of mail theme, I just had to share this handsome envelope Sendak decorated with silly and sweet drawings. I would love such a piece of mail...

You should really give this NPR interview with Sendak a listen. I was crying at Sendak's raw, sincerity. He ends with this...
"live your life, live your life, live your life."
